The quiet architecture of San Pantaleo

The quiet architecture of San Pantaleo

San Pantaleo is a short drive from the Costa Smeralda and a long way from its mood. The village square still organises the day. The granite outcrops around it organise everything else: where a wall can land, where a courtyard is cooler than a view, where a roof should stop.

Houses that belong here do not imitate the harbour. They take the vernacular seriously without becoming rustic theatre — lime, shade, a door that is not the main event. Costa Nord looks inland when a client wants Sardinia as a place to remain in October, not only to arrive in August.

The stone is not cladding. It is the reason the rooms are where they are.

Courtyards before façades

The better inland houses are planned as sequences of courts. Wind is filtered. Afternoon light is delayed. A kitchen can work with the doors open without performing for a road. This is not anti-modern. It is a more exact modernism than a wall of glass pointed at a view that cannot be inhabited at noon.

When we take a brief for San Pantaleo, we start with the plot’s granite, the well, and the existing trees. The architecture comes second, which is usually when it comes out right.
